The keyboard backlight is a small but extremely useful item on any keyboard or laptop keyboard. It not only helps users to easily manipulate and input data in dark spaces but also creates eye-catching light effects, contributing to improving user experience.
How To Adjust Keyboard Brightness On Your Macbook Air
As a high-end product line, Apple’s MacBook Air models also come equipped with a handy keyboard backlight. When in a dark space, you can increase the keyboard brightness on the MacBook Air for easier input. There are two ways to do this: use the function keys on your own keyboard or make adjustments in the macOS Control Center.
On a MacBook Air powered by an Intel chip
If you’re using a MacBook Air running on a “traditional” Intel chip (before Apple switched to its own Apple Silicon M1 chip), manually adjusting the keyboard brightness is actually pretty easy.
Take a look at the keyboard on the MacBook Air. You just need to press the F5 key to decrease the keyboard brightness and vice versa, press the F6 key to increase the keyboard brightness.
On MacBook Air running Apple M1 chip
With the release of the 2020 MacBook Air models with homegrown M1 chips, Apple has significantly changed the layout and design of their keyboards. The keyboard brightness has been replaced with the Spotlight, Dictation and Do Not Disturb buttons.
So how to increase keyboard brightness or turn on/off keyboard backlight on Macbook Air M1? Use the “Keyboard Brightness” adjustment slider in Control Center. Alternatively, you can also install a third-party application to remap the F5 and F6 keys to the keyboard brightness adjustment function as before, but this is complicated and not recommended.
Adjust keyboard brightness using Control Center
You’ll find a dedicated keyboard backlight adjustment area in the macOS Control Center (available on macOS Big Sur and later).
To access, click the Control Center icon (next to the date and time area) in the upper right corner of the screen.
Here, you click on “Keyboard Brightness”.
You will see a large slider appear on the screen. Use it to increase or decrease the keyboard brightness.
If you often need to adjust keyboard brightness, you can pin the slider to the system menu bar.
To do this, you open Control Center, click on the item “Keyboard Brightness” and drag it onto the system menu bar.
Now, when you click the Keyboard Brightness icon from the system menu bar, the keyboard brightness control slider will immediately appear.
